Garmin rolls out major smartwatch software update

Garmin has begun rolling out a major software update for several premium smartwatch and cycling computer models, including the Fenix 8 series, Venu 4, Vivoactive 6, and select Forerunner models, as well as Edge cycling computers.

A primary feature of the update is the expansion of safety capabilities. The Venu 4 now supports all-day fall detection, allowing the device to automatically send a distress message with real-time GPS coordinates to emergency contacts if a hard fall is detected. Users can choose to enable this monitoring 24/7 or restrict it to specific outdoor activities.

The update also introduces hands-free voice control via the “OK Garmin” wake word. This allows users to initiate activities, manage timers, and activate device flashlights without touching the screen. Additionally, users can access smartphone assistants like Siri or Google Assistant using the “phone assistant” command.

For fitness training, Garmin is migrating premium features such as Quick Workouts and adaptive Run Coach plans from specialized running models to lifestyle and outdoor series. Edge cycling computers will also receive updates, including an automatic mode switcher for climbs and descents.
