Garmin updates software with Connect IQ 9.3 and voice command issues
Garmin has released Connect IQ 9.3, a platform update that allows third-party applications to access the microphone and speaker on compatible smartwatches for the first time. This expansion of hardware access applies to several recent models, including the Fenix 8, Fenix 9, Forerunner 570, Forerunner 970, and Venu 4 series.
However, users of certain models have reported significant battery life issues following the introduction of the “OK Garmin” voice command feature. Owners of the Fenix 8 and Forerunner 970 have noted estimated battery life reductions ranging from 35% to 50%. For instance, some Forerunner 970 users reported battery estimates dropping from 15 days to nine days. To resolve the drain, users can disable the voice activation trigger, which restores previous battery estimates while still allowing for manual voice commands.
