Garrahan Hospital removes brain tumor from child via nasal approach
Medical teams at the Garrahan Pediatric Hospital in Buenos Aires successfully removed a brain tumor from a 10-year-old girl using an endoscopic endonasal approach. This technique allowed surgeons to access the base of the skull through the nasal passages, avoiding the need for a conventional craniotomy.
The procedure targeted a craniopharyngioma, a rare tumor typically located near the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. While benign, these tumors require removal to prevent long-term issues with vision and hormone regulation. The surgery utilized a neuronavigator, a high-precision technology implemented last year to help locate tumors and anatomical structures accurately.
Javier González Ramos, head of Neurosurgery, noted that technological updates and teamwork enable better patient treatments. National Health Minister Mario Lugones stated that the hospital is undergoing a transformation through investments in modern equipment, which enhances its capacity to perform high-complexity interventions for children from across the country.
