Garrett Whitlock pitched through fractured tibia during Red Sox postseason push

Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock played through a fractured right tibia during the final month of the 2026 season without a full diagnosis. The injury was discovered via imaging after the team was eliminated from the American League Wild Card Series by the New York Yankees.

Despite the fracture, Whitlock maintained a 1.72 ERA across 54 appearances this season. In September, he pitched 7 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run. He is currently in a boot for four to six weeks but is not expected to require surgery and anticipates being ready for spring training.

The series of recent injury updates has led to criticism from fans regarding the Red Sox medical staff's ability to diagnose players. Red Sox broadcaster Lou Merloni defended the staff, suggesting that players often choose to manage discomfort to continue playing and that each case should be viewed individually.
