Garrotxa County Council calls for slowdown in population growth
The Garrotxa County Council (CCG) is calling for a slowdown in population growth, stating that the region has reached its capacity limits. Albert Danés, president of the CCG, warned that the current model must be reconsidered because public services and infrastructure were not designed to accommodate the recent influx of residents.
Danés highlighted a significant discrepancy between service capacity and actual population, noting that services designed for 40,000 people are now serving approximately 60,000. A primary concern is the acute housing shortage in Olot and other municipalities within the region. The council warns that without intervention, the lack of adequate housing could lead to substandard living conditions, such as overcrowding.
The council describes this as a “matter for the country” and is urging the Generalitat to implement tools to manage the pace of population growth to ensure that services and housing can keep up with demand.
