Gartner predicts no large-scale enterprise AI on quantum hardware through 2028

Gartner predicts that no enterprise AI workloads at scale will run on quantum hardware through 2028. According to the research, classical accelerated chips, such as CPUs, GPUs, and TPUs, will continue to dominate all production benchmarks for the foreseeable future.

Chirag Dekate, VP Analyst at Gartner, noted that there is currently no peer-reviewed evidence demonstrating a clear performance or cost advantage for quantum hardware in production AI workloads. He clarified that when vendors market ‘quantum AI,’ they are typically referring to hybrid or quantum-inspired techniques rather than quantum-native AI running at an enterprise scale.

The report distinguishes between three distinct categories: classical AI, which provides measurable ROI today; quantum-inspired AI, which uses quantum mechanics concepts on conventional hardware; and hybrid quantum-classical methods, which remain largely limited to research and small-scale pilots.
