Gary Lineker criticizes Suella Braverman over English identity remarks
Gary Lineker has criticized Reform UK education spokesperson Suella Braverman following her comments regarding her own English identity. During an appearance on BBC’s Question Time, Braverman stated she is ‘British of Asian ethnicity’ rather than English, citing her parents' foreign birth.
Speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Lineker argued that such rhetoric is designed to ‘divide and rule’ and expressed that such comments ‘depress me a little bit.’ He contrasted political discourse with the harmony found in sports dressing rooms, where players of various ethnicities and religions coexist respectfully.
Lineker also referenced comments made by former Germany manager Jürgen Klopp. Klopp had previously dismissed similar divisive rhetoric, stating that in a sports environment, individuals are respected based on facts rather than being discredited by false opinions.
