Gary Oldman predicts HBO’s Harry Potter series will be more satisfying than films

Actor Gary Oldman believes the upcoming HBO television adaptation of the Harry Potter saga will be more satisfying for viewers than the original film series. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Oldman noted that the films often had to sacrifice character detail and subplots to fit within strict theatrical runtimes.

Oldman, who portrayed Sirius Black in the film franchise, expressed optimism that the television format will allow the story to be told “pretty much word-for-word” from the source material. He suggested that the additional time provided by a series will allow the world of Hogwarts to breathe and provide the depth that was previously lost due to time constraints.

The new series is scheduled to debut on HBO and stream on HBO Max in late 2026.
