Gary Oldman predicts HBO's Harry Potter series will be more satisfying than films

Actor Gary Oldman, who portrayed Sirius Black in the Harry Potter film franchise, believes the upcoming HBO television series will be “more satisfying” for fans than the original movies. Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival, Oldman noted that the film adaptations often had to sacrifice significant character details and subplots to fit within a limited theatrical runtime.

Oldman suggested that the television format allows for a much more faithful, “word-for-word” adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s novels. He highlighted that while the films were often condensed to approximately three hours, the series will have the necessary time to explore the depth of the characters and the complexities of the wizarding world.

Reflecting on his time with the franchise, Oldman described the series as a “phenomenon” and expressed gratitude for his involvement. He also credited director Chris Columbus for establishing the world and the original cast. The new Harry Potter series is expected to debut on HBO and HBO Max around Christmas 2026.
