Gary Woodland discusses recovery from brain surgery and PTSD

Professional golfer Gary Woodland is navigating a recovery year following brain surgery in September 2023 to remove a lesion. The procedure addressed issues that had previously caused tremors, chills, and seizures. While making progress, Woodland continues to manage symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and physical sensitivities to sudden movements and extreme weather.

Woodland described using physical rituals to manage anxiety, such as placing his hand on his heart to ground himself and regulate his breathing. He noted that his recent performances, including a victory at the Houston Open and several top-ten finishes, have been significant milestones in his comeback. He currently competes on the PGA Tour, recently entering the FedEx Cup playoffs.
