The spike is attributed to Iranian attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, which increased crude oil prices by roughly $20 per barrel.

This economic shift has altered campaign strategies. While Republicans dominated advertisements regarding gas prices during the 2024 cycle, Democrats are now running approximately two-thirds of ads on the subject. Democratic candidates are using rising costs to target Republican incumbents, accusing them of failing to address affordability.

In specific races, such as Arizona’s 6th district, Democratic nominee Jo Mendoza has criticized Representative Juan Ciscomani for his stance on Iran war powers resolutions. Similarly, in Iowa’s 1st district, Democratic nominee Christina Bohannon has called for accountability from Republican incumbent Mariannette Miller-Meeks. Former President Donald Trump has stated he would “never apologize” for the rising prices, citing the necessity of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
