Gasgrid Finland extends hydrogen pipeline route to 1,750 km

Gasgrid Finland has implemented significant modifications to the proposed 1,500-kilometer hydrogen pipeline route following feedback from landowners, municipalities, and other stakeholders. The company reported making nearly 200 route changes to minimize impacts on residential areas, groundwater, the environment, and general land use.

These adjustments have increased the total length of the hydrogen network from approximately 1,500 kilometers to 1,750 kilometers. In the Ostrobothnia region, the most notable changes have occurred in Närpes and Kristinestad.

Local planning officials noted that the shift in routing presents various trade-offs. While moving the pipeline from farmland to forest land may protect agricultural drainage and cultivation, it requires keeping the forest area clear of vegetation, which impacts forestry operations. Gasgrid continues to seek public input via its mapping service, with environmental impact assessments expected to be completed early next year.
