Gasmig announces expansion plan for Minas Gerais gas infrastructure

Gasmig, the state-owned gas company of Minas Gerais, has announced a five-year plan to expand gas infrastructure across all regions of the state. The strategy aims to extend the network from the north to the south of Minas Gerais through anchor projects that will enable the construction of new pipelines.

A major component of the plan includes a R$ 1 billion investment to develop a biomethane network in the Triângulo Mineiro region. President Gustavo De Marchi stated that the goal is to reach all areas of the state, noting that current free-market natural gas consumption is approximately 3 million cubic meters per day, a volume that could double as industries seek to decarbonize.

The company is specifically targeting the mining sector to encourage the replacement of diesel with less polluting fuels. Additionally, Gasmig is working to create transport corridors that will initially utilize gas and eventually transition to renewable fuels. In Northern Minas Gerais, the potential implementation of a thermoelectric plant is viewed as a key anchor to justify new pipeline construction.
