Gasteinertal combines thermal springs with winter sports
The Gasteinertal region in Austria offers a unique combination of winter sports and thermal wellness. The area features 19 thermal springs at the foot of the Graukogel, which produce five million liters of thermal water daily at temperatures between 44 and 47 degrees Celsius.
Visitors can access the Gasteiner Heilstollen, a healing tunnel where temperatures reach up to 41.5 degrees Celsius with 100 percent humidity. The tunnel is noted for its mild radon radiation, which is used for its anti-inflammatory properties.
The region has a long history as a destination for European aristocracy and celebrities, including Empress Elisabeth, Kaiser Wilhelm I, Thomas Mann, and Marlene Dietrich. Modern attractions include the Alpentherme in Bad Hofgastein, various ski areas such as Stubnerkogel and Schlossalm, and a 140-meter-long suspension bridge on the Stubnerkogel located at 2,300 meters.
