Gastouni: Roma group attacks police station to free detainee
A group of Roma individuals launched an attack on the Piniou Police Station in Gastouni, Ilia, on the afternoon of August 15. The incident occurred while officers from the newly formed Prevention and Mediation Group (OPDI) were transporting an 18-year-old male, wanted for fraud, to the station.
During the transport, three other young Roma individuals, along with the detainee, attacked the officers, leading to a clash. Two police officers sustained minor injuries and received first aid at the Gastouni Health Center before returning to duty. Four individuals involved in the clash managed to escape, though they have been identified. In the subsequent investigation, the 16-year-old brother of the 18-year-old was arrested but later released by order of the prosecutor.
Reports also indicate that the group invaded the police station, causing significant material damage to doors, offices, and equipment. Following the incident, reinforced police forces were deployed to the area, and the General Inspector of Police for Southern Greece, Brigadier General Nikolaos Spyridakis, arrived to oversee the investigation. PASOK MP Michalis Katrinis criticized the government, stating that the incident highlights the urgent need for a permanent and substantial strengthening of the police force in the Ilia region.
