Gastroenterologist warns against harmful bathroom habits
Gastroenterologist Dr. Susan Case has identified several common bathroom habits that can negatively impact digestive health. Speaking to EatingWell, Dr. Case warned that certain behaviors can contribute to hemorrhoids and other gastrointestinal issues.
One major concern is regularly ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement. Doing so can lead to constipation, as the large intestine absorbs more water from the stool, making it harder and drier. Over time, this can stretch the sigmoid colon and rectum, potentially leading to further digestive complications and reduced sensitivity to the body's natural signals.
Additionally, Dr. Case advised against spending excessive time on the toilet, such as scrolling through a phone, and cautioned against straining during bowel movements. She recommends listening to the body's signals and allowing five to ten minutes for a natural, uncomplicated process.
