Gastroenterologist warns of health risks linked to bowel habit changes
Gastroenterology specialist Dr. Hüseyin Kaçmaz has issued guidance regarding changes in bowel habits that may indicate underlying health issues. Key symptoms requiring attention include prolonged constipation, persistent diarrhea, alternating cycles of constipation and diarrhea, narrowing of stool diameter, blood in the stool, and a sensation of incomplete evacuation.
Dr. Kaçmaz noted that while some changes are temporary due to diet, hydration, stress, or medication, others may signal serious conditions. Potential causes include intestinal infections, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disorders, celiac disease, and in some instances, colon cancer.
He emphasized that while lifestyle factors like sudden changes in fiber intake or excessive consumption of fatty foods can affect bowel movements, persistent or worsening symptoms necessitate consultation with a specialist, as early diagnosis can significantly improve treatment success.
