Gastroenterology experts discuss abdominal bloating and cancer prevention
Medical experts are highlighting the physiological complexities of abdominal bloating and strategies for colorectal cancer prevention.
Regarding abdominal discomfort, Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Dr. Melih Özel explains a condition known as ‘abdominofrenic dyssynergia’. In this condition, visible abdominal swelling may occur without a significant increase in intestinal gas. This happens because the diaphragm and the abdominal wall muscles fail to coordinate properly; the diaphragm moves downward while the abdominal wall relaxes, causing internal organs to shift forward and downward.
In terms of cancer prevention, Associate Professor Dr. Genco Gençdal emphasizes the importance of gut microbiota and diet in reducing colorectal cancer risks. Key recommendations include consuming approximately 30 grams of fiber daily through whole grains, legumes, and fruits, while ensuring adequate water intake. Dr. Gençdal warns against processed meats like sausages and salami, suggesting a limit of 350-500 grams of red meat per week. He stresses that while healthy eating is vital, it does not replace the necessity of regular colonoscopy screenings to detect and remove polyps.
