Gastrointestinal health: Experts identify key risks and habits

Medical professionals are highlighting key behaviors that contribute to gastrointestinal discomfort and conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and stomach ulcers.

Doctors note that while spicy foods and temperature extremes (such as eating hot spicy food with cold drinks) can cause immediate discomfort for sensitive individuals, they are not the primary causes of ulcers. Instead, the most significant risk factor for stomach ulcers is the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen. These medications, including some topical pain relief patches, can damage the gastric mucosa and increase the risk of bleeding.

Other high-risk behaviors include: • Consuming large amounts of beverages during meals, which can overexpand the stomach. • Eating late-night meals and lying down shortly after, which facilitates acid reflux. • Improper storage of leftover food, which can lead to bacterial growth. • Excessive alcohol consumption, which directly damages the stomach lining.

To maintain digestive health, experts recommend practicing portion control, avoiding overeating, and being mindful of medication use. They also suggest eating in a focused manner rather than being distracted by phones or work, which can lead to overconsumption.
