Gates Foundation pledges $1 billion to expand global AI access

The Gates Foundation has pledged at least $1 billion over the next two years to expand global access to artificial intelligence. This initiative, announced alongside the 10th annual Goalkeepers Report, aims to prevent AI from widening the gap between wealthy and developing nations.

The funding is strategically allocated across four key sectors: 40% for healthcare to support clinical decision-making and diagnostics, 40% for education to provide personalized learning tools, 10% for agriculture to assist smallholder farmers with weather and soil data, and 10% for digital infrastructure and underserved languages. The foundation noted that over 90% of early large language model training data was English-centric, creating a linguistic barrier for many communities.

Bill Gates has also called for the establishment of a permanent international organization to manage AI risks, drawing parallels to nuclear inspection systems. He emphasized that without deliberate intervention, market forces will likely prioritize the needs of wealthy institutions over those who could benefit most from the technology.
