Gates Foundation Sets 2030 and 2045 Goals for Math Achievement and Career Credentials

The Gates Foundation unveiled a new five‑year education plan aimed at boosting student outcomes before the foundation’s slated closure in 2045. By 2030 it targets higher math achievement, a rise in first‑generation college enrollment, and a jump in the share of college credits transferred between institutions from 32 % to 40 %.

A broader “North Star” goal is to double the growth of “credentials of value,” seeking 10 million additional career or academic credentials earned by 2045. The plan also emphasizes integrating artificial‑intelligence tools into instruction and college advising, while noting that most teachers have received little formal AI training.

Allan Golston, president of the foundation’s U.S. program, said the effort builds on earlier math work and will maintain annual K‑12 spending at roughly $250‑$300 million. The initiative is positioned as a coordinated push across instruction, college completion and technology to prepare students for a rapidly evolving workforce.
