Gateshead, NSW Tribute Held for 13-Year-Old Killed in Stolen Car Crash

A 13‑year‑old boy died after an allegedly stolen Toyota Kluger crashed into a paddock on Willow Road in Gateshead in the early hours of 3 August. Police found a 14‑year‑old boy with leg injuries who was taken to John Hunter Hospital under police guard, and two other occupants – another 14‑year‑old and an 18‑year‑old man – were also hospitalized under police supervision.

Friends of the victim set up a makeshift tribute at the crash site, placing flowers, balloons and a photograph. A family friend, Malacai Austin, attended and expressed his grief. The Department of Education confirmed the school had reached out to the community to offer support. NSW Police said the vehicle was believed to have been stolen from the Swansea area between 22:00 on 2 August and 03:00 on 3 August, and investigations remain ongoing.
