Gatot Nurmantyo calls for meritocracy and neutrality in TNI

Former Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Commander Gatot Nurmantyo has emphasized the critical importance of meritocracy and neutrality within the military. Speaking at an Indonesia Strategic and Defence Studies (ISDS) webinar, Gatot warned that if promotions and leadership roles are determined by political connections, family ties, or non-professional factors rather than achievement, ethics, and experience, the professionalism of the TNI will be compromised.

Gatot expressed concern that a breakdown in the merit system could cause deep frustration among soldiers who risk their lives in active duty. He criticized those who seek positions through political proximity, using strong language to describe such individuals as “political prostitutes” and stating that soldiers should focus on serving the country rather than chasing rank through political means.

The Anti-Corruption Committee Indonesia (KAKI) East Java has voiced its support for these statements. KAKI East Java Chairman Moh.
