Gauhati Medical College performs Assam's first public liver transplant

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has successfully performed the first liver transplant in a government hospital in Assam. The 16-hour surgery involved a 48-year-old man from the Kamrup Metropolitan district, who received a portion of his liver from his younger sister.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that both the donor and the recipient are currently recovering in the Intensive Care Unit. This procedure is part of a state government liver transplantation programme aimed at providing complex medical treatments within public healthcare facilities to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for specialized care.

In addition to this milestone, the state government plans to expand tertiary healthcare services in Assam. Future initiatives include developing a statewide cancer care network, introducing bone marrow transplantation services at GMCH, and establishing a proton beam therapy unit in Guwahati, which would be the first of its kind in India's public sector.
