Gautam Gambhir faces scrutiny over Indian cricket selection strategies

India head coach Gautam Gambhir is facing criticism regarding his selection strategies and management of young talent. One point of contention involves the decision to bench 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi for the opening T20I against Afghanistan in New Delhi. Despite a strong performance during the tour of Zimbabwe, Suryavanshi was relegated to the bench following difficult outings in England.

Additionally, former player Subramaniam Badrinath has questioned Gambhir’s emphasis on selecting all-rounders. Badrinath suggested that the pursuit of multi-skilled players has led to the selection of individuals, such as Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, even when they face fitness concerns. Badrinath noted that the team has yet to find a proven successor to Hardik Pandya through this approach.
