Gaute Skjervø faces intense online harassment and threats

Outgoing AUF leader Gaute Skjervø has been the target of intense online harassment, including death threats and personal attacks directed at his family. The harassment intensified after Skjervø criticized the media outlet Document for its journalistic practices and its receipt of state press subsidies.

AUF has reported several of these incidents to the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) for evaluation. While some reports were dismissed because the comments did not meet the legal threshold for criminal threats or hate speech under current laws, the situation has sparked a national debate regarding the legal protections for individual politicians.

Critics and political figures, including Unge Høyre leader Ola Svenneby, have highlighted the high cost of participating in public debate when individuals face such vitriol. The debate also touches on the limitations of Norwegian law, which provides stronger protection against group-based hate speech than against attacks on specific individuals.
