Gauteng courts oversee Matlala trial and Mapisa-Nqakula corruption case

Major legal proceedings are underway in Gauteng, including the trial of alleged underworld figure Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala and four co-accused. The Johannesburg High Court is currently conducting a trial-within-a-trial to determine the admissibility of evidence seized during the arrest of Musa Kekana. Kekana’s defense alleges he was subjected to assault and torture by police and that his constitutional rights were violated.

The proceedings were briefly disrupted when struck-off advocate Malesela Teffo attempted to represent the accused through a foundation. Judge Cassim Moosa ordered Teffo to provide documentary proof of his legal standing before any application could be heard, following objections from the defense teams.

In a separate matter at the Pretoria High Court, former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is seeking to have her corruption and money laundering charges dismissed. She is accused of receiving payments from a Defence Force contractor between 2016 and 2019.
