Gauteng education department manages high demand for 2027 school placements

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has received 805,688 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placements for the 2027 academic year. These applications represent 346,877 individual learners. The high volume of applications has placed significant pressure on the province's public schooling system, with many popular schools receiving thousands of applications despite limited capacity.

Education MEC Lebogang Maile noted that the concentration of demand highlights issues with population growth and school capacity. He stated that the department cannot sustain a situation where certain schools are overwhelmed while others nearby have available space. For learners who cannot be accommodated at their preferred schools, the GDE will provide alternative placement offers at schools with available capacity. The placement communication phase is scheduled to run from November 2 to November 20, 2026.

In response to the high demand, the GDE has issued a warning against corruption and fraud. MEC Maile cautioned parents against placement syndicates and individuals who claim they can secure school spots in exchange for money, emphasizing that learner placement cannot be bought and that those attempting to manipulate the process will face consequences.
