Gauteng Police Officer Killed in Violent Mine Ambush in Limpopo

A Gauteng-based police officer was fatally shot during an ambush at a mine in Ga‑Mahlokwane village, Sekhukhune district, Limpopo. The officer and another man, who claimed to have a court order to halt mining operations, were confronted by armed assailants after returning to the site. One attacker was killed on the spot, and the officer later died of his injuries.

Limpopo police opened two murder investigations and launched a large‑scale manhunt, with Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers mobilising all available resources. Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba described the killing as a shock to the force. The incident underscores escalating violence linked to illegal mining and disputed mining rights in the region, prompting authorities to urge the public to provide information.
