Gauteng police shootout leaves three suspected CIT robbers dead
Three suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers were fatally shot during a police shootout on the R80 highway in Gauteng on Monday, 28 September 2026. A fourth suspect was taken into custody.
A multidisciplinary team—including the South African Police Service (SAPS) Tactical Response Team, the Anti-Gang Unit, the Gauteng Traffic Airwing, and private security—was acting on intelligence regarding a planned robbery in the Olivenhoutbosch area of Pretoria. The team identified two vehicles, a white Hyundai H1 and a Toyota Avanza.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, officers attempted to stop the Hyundai H1 using blue lights, but the occupants allegedly opened fire. The ensuing confrontation resulted in three deaths. Authorities recovered an AK-47 and a 9mm pistol from the vehicle. The driver of the Toyota Avanza was arrested and allegedly found with a second 9mm pistol.
Major General Fred Kekana, the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing in Gauteng, commended the team for their efforts to disrupt CIT and cross-pavement robberies in the province. Recovered firearms have been sent for ballistic testing to determine if they are linked to other crimes.
