Gauteng residents warned of extreme heat and UV levels
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for Gauteng residents regarding upcoming hot weather and extreme ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Temperatures are expected to reach high levels, with Pretoria potentially hitting 34°C and Johannesburg reaching 31°C.
Forecasters warn that the UV index could reach 12, which is categorized as extreme. Residents are advised to seek shade, particularly between 11:00 and 15:00, and to use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, wear protective clothing, and use sunglasses.
In addition to heat exhaustion and heatstroke risks, authorities are emphasizing water safety. The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has urged caregivers to supervise children near dams, rivers, and streams to prevent drowning, suggesting municipal swimming pools with lifeguards as a safer alternative for cooling off.
