Gavdos mourns 16-year-old following fatal traffic accident

The island of Gavdos is in mourning following a fatal traffic accident on Saturday afternoon that claimed the life of 16-year-old Nikola. The accident occurred in the peninsula area where the teenager had been residing following the death of his father in 2025.

The Municipality of Gavdos issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and offering condolences to the family, describing the youth as ‘a child of our Gavdos’ and noting that his premature death leaves a profound void in the community.

Nikola was a well-known figure on the island, part of a family that made a conscious effort to remain in the remote southern tip of Europe despite the challenges of local education. Previous reports highlighted his family's commitment to maintaining life on the island, noting that in recent years, Nikola and his sister were among the few students keeping the local school active.
