Gave de Pau calcite geodes exposed by drought

Exceptionally low water levels in the Gave de Pau river, caused by drought and high summer temperatures, have exposed highly pure calcite geodes in the riverbed. Known as the ‘diamonds of the Pyrenees’, these crystals are prized by collectors for their clarity and brilliance, which resemble real diamonds.

While the minerals have been known for decades, their increased accessibility due to receding waters has triggered a rush of geologists and collectors. River conservationists are warning that this activity is damaging the riverbed, as prospectors break open conglomerate blocks to find the finest geodes.
