Gavi Allocates $500 Million to Boost Nigeria’s Vaccines and Primary Health Care

The Gavi vaccine alliance has approved a US$500 million funding package for Nigeria under its Gavi 6.0 programme covering 2026–2030. The allocation will support routine immunisation, sustain polio eradication, expand HPV vaccination, strengthen primary‑health‑care (PHC) services and improve long‑term vaccine financing. The decision was announced after a meeting in Abuja between Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and Gavi Chief Executive Officer Dr. Sania Nishtar. Pate said the predictable five‑year funding envelope will enable more effective planning and delivery of life‑saving vaccines to children and vulnerable groups. He also highlighted that quarterly visits to PHC centres have risen from about 10 million in 2023 to over 45 million, reflecting rapid progress in revitalising the health system. The announcement coincided with a US pledge of US$600 million to Gavi, underscoring international support for the initiative.
