Gavi allocates $7m to combat Ebola outbreak in DRC
Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has announced $7 million in additional funding to support the response to a Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) outbreak. This funding will facilitate the deployment of 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine from the global Ebola vaccine stockpile to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
In addition to the vaccine doses, Gavi has approved $6 million from its First Response Fund to protect broader immunization services in high-risk areas and prepare for Ebola vaccination efforts. The Ervebo vaccine, which has been used successfully in previous Ebola Zaire outbreaks, is being deployed due to its proven safety and early evidence suggesting it can reduce severe illness and death from BVD.
