Gavi: New TB vaccines could save 7.3 million lives by 2050
Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has announced that new tuberculosis (TB) vaccines, expected to be available starting in 2029, could save an estimated 7.3 million lives between 2030 and 2050. The organization's analysis suggests these next-generation vaccines could also unlock up to $135 billion in economic benefits for low- and middle-income countries by mid-century.
Currently, the only licensed vaccine for TB is the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG), which is over 100 years old. While BCG is effective at protecting infants and young children from severe forms of the disease, its protection wanes over time. The new vaccines aim to fill this gap, specifically targeting adolescents and adults.
Gavi CEO Sania Nishtar emphasized that the success of these vaccines depends on ensuring a sufficient, predictable, and affordable supply for countries with the highest disease burden. Demand in low- and middle-income countries could reach an average of 85 million vaccination courses annually. The alliance is already working with partners to lay the groundwork for timely access once regulatory approvals are secured.
