Gavin Bazunu withdraws from Ireland matches against Israel
Gavin Bazunu, a goalkeeper for Bolton and the Ireland national team, has officially withdrawn from upcoming matches against Israel due to personal ethical convictions regarding the conflict in Gaza. Bazunu stated on social media that he does not wish to participate in matches where atrocities against innocent civilians occur, clarifying that his decision is based on his ethical vision rather than a stance against the Israeli people or Jewish community.
During the UEFA Nations League match held in Debrecen, Hungary, the rest of the Irish squad voted to play, with a significant majority supporting participation. To express solidarity with Palestinians, the team wore black bracelets in memory of lives lost in the conflict, declined traditional handshakes with opponents, and bowed their heads during the Israeli national anthem. Captain Dara O’Shea announced that all match earnings would be donated to Gaza relief projects.
Ireland's coach, Heimir Hallgrímsson, noted that the situation has left many feeling uncomfortable. Bazunu’s boycott extends to the upcoming match scheduled for October 4 in Serbia.
