Gavin Bennett jailed for sexual offences after fleeing into sea

Gavin Bennett, 45, has been sentenced to three years and eight months in prison following a series of sexual offences. The sentencing took place at Cardiff Crown Court.

Bennett was charged with two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child after police responded to reports in Porthcawl that he had sent inappropriate messages to a girl he believed to be under 16. During the attempted arrest on October 22 last year, Bennett fled into the sea to evade officers. Two South Wales Police officers waded approximately 20 metres into the water in darkness and treacherous currents to ensure his safety and bring him back to shore.

In addition to the communication charges, Bennett was sentenced for two counts of sexually assaulting a female, involving incidents reported to police in August 2023. He was also issued a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
