To counter the inquiry, Newsom’s office filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the DOJ demanding every document that mentions Gavin Newsom, his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom, or the Newsom name since Jan. 20, 2025. He posted on Twitter, "My office is demanding" the records, framing the move as a push for transparency. Critics argue the governor is deploying state staff and taxpayer‑funded resources for personal legal defense, a practice California law bars.
