Gavin Newsom faces federal probe into travel and personal spending

Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of California have issued subpoenas as part of an expanding criminal investigation into California Governor Gavin Newsom. The probe focuses on the California State Protocol Foundation, a nonprofit that has funded Newsom’s international travel and protocol expenses through private donations.

The subpoenas seek approximately six years of records, including communications, receipts, and documentation regarding the foundation’s donors and fundraisers. Investigators are also looking into expenditures related to the governor’s residence, living costs, and personal expenses. The requests include communications from a circle of Newsom’s aides and advisors, specifically naming chief protocol officer Rebecca Prowda, who is married to San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie.

Since 2019, Newsom has directed more than $7.5 million in donations from outside groups to the foundation. Newsom’s administration has dismissed the investigation as a politically motivated “witch hunt” and “retribution” by the Trump administration intended to derail his potential future presidential ambitions. The records obtained are expected to be presented to a grand jury.
