Governor Gavin Newsom faces federal probe as poll shows Democratic support

The U.S. Department of Justice, through the FBI and IRS, is investigating California Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. The probe focuses on the couple’s finances and tax records, including contributions to Siebel Newsom’s nonprofit The Representation Project and her for‑profit company. Newsom has portrayed the investigation as a politically motivated attack ordered by former President Donald Trump to derail his anticipated 2028 presidential campaign, claiming “to get me, he’s coming after my wife.” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the governor’s allegations are “not grounded in fact.”

A Daily Mail/JL Partners poll of 1,059 registered voters found that 27% of Democrats support the federal probe, with 14% “somewhat” and 13% “strongly” in favor. Support is higher among Republicans, with over 70% backing the investigation, while 43% of independents say they support it. The survey also ranked Newsom second among potential Democratic 2028 presidential candidates, receiving 15% support.

The investigation has been ongoing since at least 2025 and is separate from a prior federal case that led to a former chief of staff pleading guilty to fraud and tax charges. Newsom continues to deny wrongdoing and has called the inquiry a “fishing expedition.”
