Gavin Newsom praises Trump Accounts and signs privacy law

California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken two distinct political actions involving both bipartisan praise and legislative controversy.

In a rare departure from his usual criticism of the Trump administration, Newsom praised the ‘Trump Accounts’ program. These tax-advantaged investment accounts, authorized via the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’, provide $1,000 to children born between 2025 and 2028, with additional contribution options for parents and employers. Newsom described the initiative as ‘one of the best things’ the president has done and encouraged Californians to utilize the program regardless of political affiliation. He also credited First Lady Melania Trump for her ‘Fostering the Future’ initiative, which helps bridge eligibility gaps for foster children.

Separately, Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2624, nicknamed the ‘Stop Nick Shirley Act’ by opponents. The law expands California’s Safe at Home program to provide address confidentiality for employees of nonprofits that assist individuals navigating the immigration system. Proponents, including Assemblywoman Mia Bonta, argue the measure is necessary to protect workers from rising threats and doxxing. Critics, however, contend the law could be used to shield organizations from journalistic scrutiny and impede investigations into potential fraud.
