California Governor Newsom signs diverse new legislative measures
Governor Gavin Newsom has signed several new laws in California addressing diverse social, economic, and safety issues.
In public health, Assembly Bill 2244 establishes a first-in-the-nation voluntary label for foods that are ‘not ultra-processed’ to help consumers, particularly Black families, make healthier choices. This initiative is expected to begin its first phase in June 2029.
Regarding public safety and civil rights, Newsom signed legislation to recognize Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays, providing state employees with leave options. He also signed AB 1349 to strengthen consumer protections for live entertainment ticket buyers by targeting deceptive sales and bot usage. Additionally, new laws aim to protect immigrants by restricting ICE operations and taxing private detention centers.
However, some sectors have raised concerns. The Chief Probation Officers of California warned that recent legislation may hinder the supervision of violent juvenile offenders. In the energy sector, new bills aim to utilize home batteries and virtual power plants to combat rising electricity costs. Other measures include streamlining retail renovation permits and implementing stricter consent and recordkeeping requirements for online adult platforms.
