Gavin Robinson addresses Irish language use and politicisation

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Gavin Robinson has stated he will not be disrespectful toward individuals who wish to use the Irish language. Robinson, the MP for East Belfast, noted that while he speaks ‘Cúpla focal’ (a few words in Irish), he has concerns regarding the politicisation and ‘weaponisation’ of the language.

Robinson expressed reservations about increased public spending on the language during a period of strained resources. He also addressed the historical context of the language, noting its revival in Belfast and the role of Presbyterian ministers in its protection. He contrasted his stance with previous DUP leadership, specifically referencing 2017 criticisms directed at Arlene Foster regarding Irish language legislation.

Robinson emphasized that the DUP does not oppose the freedom of individuals to learn or use the language, but rather objects to the use of the language as a political tool, citing provocative rhetoric within the Irish republican community.
