Gaviota reports only 11.6% of its 30,000 Cuban hotel rooms are operational

Gaviota, the hotel subsidiary of the military conglomerate GAESA, has revealed that only 3,470 of its 30,000 reported hotel rooms are currently operational in Cuba. This represents approximately 11.6% of the company’s total lodging capacity.

Sales Director Elia Elena Cortés stated that the company is concentrating its services and supplies in western and central Cuba—including Havana, Varadero, Topes de Collantes, and Santa María—to enhance customer service amid operational constraints. The group also announced the opening of a new 85-room luxury adult-only resort, Hotel Playa Luxury Varadero, located on the Hicacos Peninsula.

The reduction in capacity follows a significant downturn in the sector. Cuba hosted 450,353 international tourists between January and August 2026, a 64.4% decrease compared to the previous year. The industry has faced challenges including U.S. sanctions and the withdrawal of major foreign hotel chains such as Meliá, Iberostar, and Barceló.
