Gawara Baya wind and battery project reaches financial close

The Gawara Baya hybrid renewable energy project in North Queensland has reached financial close and is moving into the construction phase. The project consists of a 408MW wind farm and a 104MW grid-forming battery energy storage system (BESS).

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has acquired full ownership of the project from Windlab. The development is supported by a $1.7 billion financing facility involving 10 banks and has secured long-term energy offtake arrangements with Stanwell and SmartestEnergy, as well as participation in the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme.

Developed under a landmark Indigenous Land Use Agreement with the Gugu Badhun People, the project includes commitments to cultural heritage protection, environmental stewardship, and economic benefits. It also features Australia’s first renewable energy biodiversity net-gain strategy. Construction is expected to inject AU$200 million into the regional economy and support approximately 500 jobs.
