Gayton McKenzie takes VAR funding dispute with SAFA to FIFA

South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has escalated a dispute with the South African Football Association (SAFA) regarding the stalled implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. McKenzie revealed that R13 million (approximately $800,000) was provided to SAFA to facilitate the introduction of VAR in the Premier Soccer League, but the project has failed to progress.

To assist the project, the ministry facilitated study trips to Spain and the United Kingdom for journalists and football administrators to observe VAR operations. Following the lack of progress, McKenzie has formally demanded the return of the state funds and has given SAFA 21 days to account for the money.

Due to the impasse, McKenzie announced he is taking the matter to FIFA, stating, “I have already spoken to FIFA. But I’m writing to them.” He expressed frustration at being “let down terribly” and emphasized his accountability for the use of state funds.
