Gaza and Lebanon conflict causes massive casualties and developmental crisis

The ongoing conflict in Gaza and Lebanon has resulted in significant casualties and a deepening humanitarian crisis. In Gaza, the death toll has reached at least 73,386 Palestinians since October 2023, with over 174,000 injuries reported. Since a ceasefire was announced in October 2025, at least 1,250 Palestinians have been killed, including 300 children according to UNICEF. Recent strikes have targeted vehicles and motorcycles in Gaza City, Khan Younis, and northern Gaza.

In Lebanon, fighting that began on March 2 has resulted in at least 4,346 deaths and 12,301 injuries, displacing more than 1.2 million people. Recent Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, including the town of Nabatieh, have caused further casualties.

Beyond the immediate physical toll, the conflict is creating a long-term developmental emergency for children in Gaza. An estimated 105,000 to 110,000 infants have been born into the conflict zone since 2023. Humanitarian organizations, including Save the Children and Fondazione Soleterre, report that the destruction of educational infrastructure and the absence of safe environments are causing permanent psychological trauma and hindering essential cognitive and emotional development.
