Gaza beekeeper Ibrahim al‑Dabba rebuilds hives after war
Before the 2023‑24 conflict, Gaza’s beekeepers kept roughly 30,000 hives and produced about 400 metric tons of honey each year. The war reduced honey output to roughly 10 % of pre‑war levels, with only about 700 hives left across the enclave. Ibrahim al‑Dabba, a 49‑year‑old beekeeper and president of the Gaza Beekeepers’ Cooperative Society, lost more than 400 hives, his equipment and his home. He estimates his financial loss exceeds $350,000. After the cease‑fire, he bought three hives for 10,000 shekels (about $3,200) and has managed to increase his colonies to about 35 hives, placing them on the roof of a damaged building because the yellow‑line military demarcation bars beekeepers from agricultural areas. Israel controlled an estimated 64 % of Gaza by late April, and the territory’s roughly 2 million residents remain concentrated in a narrow coastal strip under dire humanitarian conditions.
