Gaza children Nobel Peace Prize nomination gains support

A growing international movement is advocating for the nomination of children in the Gaza Strip for the Nobel Peace Prize. The initiative, originally proposed by Professor Domenico Mazzarella, aims to highlight the devastating impact of armed conflict on minors and use them as symbols for children suffering in wars globally.

In Italy, the Sardinia Regional Council has introduced a motion to support this candidacy. The motion emphasizes that children are innocent victims of conflict, citing the loss of life and displacement in Gaza since October 7, 2023, as well as the impact of wars in Ukraine and Sudan. It stresses that child suffering should not be dismissed as ‘collateral damage’ and calls for adherence to international humanitarian law.

Haakon Gjerløw, interim director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), noted that while the Nobel Prize rewards those who protect victims rather than the victims themselves, such a nomination would send a powerful signal to the international community regarding the protection of children's rights, education, and safety.
