Gaza civil defence recovers 55 remains from Zeitoun residential building
Gaza civil defence teams have recovered the remains of 55 Palestinians from the rubble of a residential building in the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City. The building, which belonged to the Malka family, was destroyed by an Israeli air strike on November 19, 2023, while it was sheltering numerous displaced persons.
Colonel Muhammad Abu Dan, who supervised the rescue efforts, stated that teams had been searching for more than 60 victims from the Malka family over a 72-hour period. The recovery operation, which concluded on Saturday, was described as a slow and largely manual process due to a severe shortage of heavy machinery and specialized equipment required to clear reinforced concrete.
Rescue teams have called on international humanitarian organizations to provide heavy equipment, such as excavators and trucks, to assist in retrieving others. According to the United Nations Satellite Centre, 82 percent of buildings in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed during the conflict. Gaza’s Ministry of Health and UN agencies estimate that between 10,000 and 14,000 people remain missing under the rubble across the territory. A joint funeral procession for the recovered victims is expected to take place next week.
